For us three Foxes, going up to see our cousins the Fentons was like Christmas (and we shared a lot of those).
Gliding amidst a bedlam of seven screamings, ding bat boys, Carol, smiling constantly, seemed to have the serene elegance of a swan – mixed with a fair bit of Audrey Hepburn which she borrowed from Jill. But then her laugh would explode out of her like she was a character in a Carry On!
The first time I met Sebastian was about a year before he met Carol (a bizarre coincidence). He was directing me in a no-pay, no-budget, short film which, of course, was absolutely bonkers. In a bowler hat, like a Magritte man, and standing in the rain on a clapped-out warehouse roof near Ladbroke Grove I waited for Seb to start shooting when he lowered the camera and stared into the middle distance. “You alright, Seb?” I asked. To which he airily responded “I’ve just remembered how awful my life is” and then immediately started filming. Looking back that might have been true as he was yet to meet the beautiful Carol the Yin to his Yang.
